The Vertical of the Role
A
Seminar for Actors in Berlin 27.th of October – 11.th of November 2008
Artistic direction: Christine Schmalor
Introduction into a method for the actor’s self-preparation
The encounter with a new role is an exciting and intimate moment. A moment one does not know, if it will become a life-long friendship or not. In any case you should keep this moment for yourself not handing it over the hands of a director.
The working method „The Vertical of the Role” proposes in detailed steps how you can meet the new personnage and how you can prepare yourself for the first rehearsal and for the the meeting with the director on equal footing.
The creation of a new character on stage means to decipher the partiture of the role. This moment when the personnage and the actress are meeting each other is a special process full of secrets. In this moment something new and unique will appear – it is close to an alchemical process. It is an art to lead it.
This art is the object of our seminar.
Prof. Dr. Jurij Alschitz has developed the Vertical of the Role in numerous laboratories. Christine Schmalor has participated in this research as pedagogue from the first moment. In 2003 they published a teaching handbook on this method. The seminar gives the rare oportunity to learn all working steps first-hand, and to participate in its constant further development. The participating actors will learn how to build and compose a Vertical of the Role. The seminar will consist of daily training, analysis of the texts, and practical work on stage.
Working material: Schiller Maria Stuart and Don Carlos
AKT-ZENT will conduct the European research project „The Art of Dialogue“ in 2009-2010, which is supported by the European Commission. We will be glad to meet interesting artists in our open seminars,
with the perspective to invite them to laboratories.
The seminar starts with the introduction on 27. 10. at 7 p.m.
From 28. 10. – 10. 11. we will work daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
one free day. 11. 11. until 2 p.m.

The Art of Rehearsal
15. – 23. January & 26. January – 3. February 2009 Berlin
Artistic direction: Prof. Dr. Jurij Alschitz
Open Seminar in two parts for directors, acting teachers, pedagogues and actors
„What does it mean “The Art of Analysis”? Analysis of what – the play? the role? the scene? Why directors, actors, and teachers need to do analysis? Which analysis they have to do? Analysis of the meaning, the sense, the content? Analysis of text and words at the table? Analysis through acting? There are several ways of analysis, which can open different paths leading in different directions with very different results.
A very important question is, how do we practically realise the analysis on stage? My seminar will show you several methods of analysis, it will show you the way from the table to the stage and back, the way from your imagination to the precise structure and composition, the way from your work alone to the rehearsal with actors.” J.Alschitz
This seminar is a unique opportunity for theatre practitioners from all over Europe to gain insight into the research process of EATC, following the traditional line of K. Stanislavsky – M. Knebel – A. Vasiliew leading to the actual research of Jurij Alschitz.
The analysis at the table and the rehearsal on stage are not just two procedures which follow each other in chronological order, but two different ways to approach the material illuminating the parallel life of text and action. In the discussion we find out one thing, on stage something different.
A
The first part of the seminar will concentrate on the analysis of the role and play at the table following different directions: vertical and horizontal, from different perspectives and on the basis of different philosophies and sciences. Furthermore, Jurij Alschitz has developed a new method for the analysis of a role by asking “40 Question of one Role” (published at ars incognita 2005).
A
The second part of the seminar will focus on rehearsal methods. Different authors and texts need different approaches. The rehearsal becomes a tool for analysis as well. In order to make a correct choice for one method, you must be familiar with various ones. This knowledge gives you the basis to find new ways for the realisation of your own artistic language on stage. The seminar includes lectures, discussions, exercises on the main subjects and practical stage work with individual assignments.

The Art of Training with Christine Schmalor

addition you can book a morning-training, which gives you the possibility for a warm-up. Moreover this training will focus on the theme: the creation of exercises. How to build, compose and develop an exercise. For teachers and directors the amount of possible exercises in their “luggage” is not as important as the understanding “for what” and the knowledge about the basic components of one’s own system. The secret of training is its “simplicity” which builds up to complex structures. This way you can lead actors from simple tasks to complicated compositions, from games to the realisation of scenes, hereby checking your own analysis. Training is one practical tool to establish a different relationship between actors and the director; for teachers it is the fundament of their profession.
Application procedure: Please send us your CV and a written application.
We will inform you as soon as possible whether you have been accepted. A place will be reserved after the first payment of 120 euro (registration fee, non-refundable) has been made. Subsequently you will receive the material for preparation. Since the seminar needs your intensive preparation, we recommend early registration.
The number of places is limited.
It is possible to participate in either one or two parts of the seminar.
